A second Residents for Uttlesford Town Councillor has resigned from Saffron Walden Town Council, meaning there will be a by-election at the taxpayers’ expense held in Shire Ward. R4U lost the last by-election to Labour, and has since had one of its leading Councillors defect to Reform UK.
“The by-election represents the opportunity for Shire Ward residents to elect a new Councillor. The majority of Councillors already representing Residents for Uttlesford, with both Labour and Reform now joint opposition to R4U, there is an excellent opportunity for the electorate to elect a further opposition member, which will help our local democracy by adding a wider range of views to our local Council. This is especially important as with many reforms coming to our local politics, Saffron Walden Town Council will need to be stronger than ever in representing our local interests. R4U has simply had too much power in Saffron Walden for a decade now, and it would be healthy for our local democracy to break their stranglehold on our local political scene, and the Mayoralty of the Town, by electing an additional opposition Councillor.”
